Compositional Conception

Sound material

In the VR movie adaptation The Wall 360°, based on the novel by Marlene Haushofer, the concept of sound material is expanded in a differentiated way. Hannes Strobl integrates instrumental material, supplemented by electronically generated sounds inspired by nature. The result is a multifaceted sound material that combines the familiar with strange, abstract elements and challenges established listening habits through its sensual effect.

Natural Sound

Inspiration
The similarity of many natural sounds, especially insect sounds that often resemble electronic sounds, opens new perspectives on environmental perception. The rhythmic chirping of crickets, for example, reveals the complex acoustics of nature, which resembles electronic sounds. These parallels between natural and synthetic sounds encourage a reflection on the connection between the virtual and the organic. The polyrhythmic structure of sound events in The Wall 360°mirrors the diversity of acoustic niches, with natural sounds occupying specific frequency ranges. This acoustic ecology not only reflects the diversity of nature but also points to the fragility of ecological systems threatened by human intervention.

Spatial Sound

The spatial dimension of sounds is central to the perception of the composition, enabling listeners, through their spatial sense anchored in hearing, to grasp the acoustic qualities and arrangement of sounds. The 3D audio technology used in this VR production opens up a wide range of possibilities for designing sound spaces. The placement of sounds in three-dimensional space allows sound sources to be imagined not only acoustically but also visually. This intensifies immersion, enabling listeners to actively enter a vibrant sound world where they can experience the spatial relationships between sounds and their surroundings emotionally or sensually.
